Schematic representation with geolocation of Infrabel's network currently equipped with ETCS or equivalent. The ETCS (European Train Control System) is an automatic European safety system that greatly reduces the risk of a train driving through a red signal. Speeding, cause of many train accidents, also becomes virtually impossible. Both trains and infrastructure must be equipped with ETCS.Infrabel has an ETCS master plan, which aims to roll out ETCS across the entire railway network. The aim is that by the end of 2025, trains in Belgium will only run with ETCS. The master plan specifies which railway lines will be equipped with ETCS, and at what level. There are indeed different levels of ETCS, and Infrabel has chosen to implement a combination of the following levels:ETCS 1 LS (Limited Supervision) The train's dispatcher receives information about signals and speed limits via signals emitted by fixed beacons on the tracks. The driver does not see this information, he relies on the signals on the train's route, but if he makes a mistake, the system intervenes and brakes the train.ETCS 1 FS (Full Supervision) The dispatcher receives information about signals and speed limits via signals emitted by fixed beacons installed on the tracks. This information is also visible from the driving position.ETCS 2 FS (Full Supervision) Information about signals and speed limits no longer comes from beacons on the route, but from GSM-R masts installed along the tracks. The train driver can only rely on the information received continuously in his driving position.ETCS1+2 FS - (Full Supervision) The train driver receives the signalling and speed information in his driving position. The information comes either from beacons or GSM-R masts. This system is installed on the high-speed lines 3 (to Germany) and 4 (to the Netherlands).TVM-430 - (Machine-Track Transmission) It is a French system only used on the high-speed line 1 between Lembeek and the French border. Its operation is similar to ETCS. The control station receives a signal transmitted by the rails, which informs the driver of his speed in relation to the permitted maximum speed. Thanks in part to the support of the European Union, Infrabel can install ETCS on the entire Belgian rail network. We have already received subsidies for:ETCS level 1 Full Supervision;Placement on Corridor C (freight axis from the port of Antwerp via Leuven and Namur to Athus);Placement on line 10 and line 36C/2;Placement on the Ans-Angleur section of line 36/37 ETCS Level 2;ETCS level 2 Full Supervision:Development of a generic design that includes the pilot line Deinze-Waregem.Placement on line 12 section Kapellen-Essen Placement on line 162 section Libramont-AutelbasPlacement on line 59 section Beveren-BerchemPlacement on line 16 section Lier-AarschotPlacement on line 50A section Brugge - Gent-Sint-PietersPlacement on line 35 section Aarschot-Leuven
